About This Quote

In 1935, Virginia Woolf wrote in a letter to her sister, “I have been giving it a lot of thought and I've got to go down deep, to fall into people, to really know them.” Years later, in a letter to a friend, she explained that the reason she needed to go down into people was because she couldn't bear the thought of not knowing anyone. She said that when she was in love with someone, she wanted the sweet, innocent feeling of not knowing any better. But when someone hurt her deeply, she could no longer be ignorant about it. In this case, ignorance was bliss.
